Feeding your kitten
Diet is extremely important in the growing months of a cat’s life, and there are two important criteria that should be met in selecting food for your kitten. We recommend a premium-quality food and a form of food MADE FOR KITTENS. This should be fed until your kitten is about 12 months of age.
Feeding a dry, canned, or semi-moist form of cat food is acceptable. Each has advantages and disadvantages.
Dry food is convenient and inexpensive. Store dry food in a cool dry place, and keep the bag closed to reduce air exposure. Don’t purchase more than your cat will eat in three months (the bag should not be open for more than three months).
Interesting fact: If given the choice, the average cat will eat a mouthful of food about 12-20 times per day.
Free-choice feeding of dry food is linked to obesity. Pay attention! Some cats will overeat if food is left out all the time.
Good quality canned foods are also nutritious; they can be higher in meat than dry foods, and provide moisture. If you feed a semi-moist food, check the ingredient list for unwanted sugar and preservatives.
It’s a good idea to teach your cat to eat dry food and canned food, and to eat a variety of foods. Cats can sometimes become “addicted” to one form of food, making it difficult to switch if they need a special diet later in life.
Do not expect your kitten or cat to be healthy on dog food – it does not contain enough meat protein.
Do not feed your kitten a steady diet of canned seafood or liver – either of these can cause problems if they are over-indulged.
